(# 6) CHAMBERLAIN BRIDGE Has been a model of consistency for trainer William Bret Calhoun, one of the nation's most underrated horseman. This son of Breeders' Cup Mile Champion War Chant has been a terror sprinting on the grass, capturing half of his 12 lifetime turf starts and only missing the board one time. That uncharacteristic performance was two starts back at Tampa Bay Downs, the only time he raced over that course. Sprinting 5 furlongs against some of the quickest runners in the country, he was sandwiched at the start and was bounced around like a pinball. He quickly recovered and rushed up to duel between horses through wicked early fractions (20.4, 43.3). He then took a bad step around the far turn as new rider Jeremy Rose snatched him up, costing him critical position. Gelding was running on gamely in the lane but Rose eventually wrapped up on him when victory was out of reach. 5yo returned next out at Keeneland and rebounded in a big way off that sneaky troubled trip. He stalked the early pace of Mr. Nightlinger, who is arguably the best turf sprinter in the country. He collared that rival turning for home, put him away, and then had to try to hold off the challenge of two fresh closers. Narrowly missed at the wire in a great effort. Top rider Garrett Gomez got to know him in that race and is back aboard today. These types of races never have soft pace scenarios but there is less speed than in his prior two starts, so I expect him to be difficult to catch turning for home. Two for two here at Churchill, he should handle any type of conditions and is a bet best for either surface.
