RACE TEN OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
PLACID DREAMS (4-1) got a perfect ride by Theriot to rate between horses in 4th, tipped out top of the stretch and wore down longshot BUILDAKISS who made a perfectly timed wide sweep to the lead turning for home. Just failed to hold on in a much improved effort. GOODBYE EXCAVATE improved off the Calhoun claim. Angled out at the 1/8th pole and finished willingly for third. DUCLAW had a perfect inside trip. Dead aim thru stretch but came up empty.

by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
CRYSTAL BALL STRIKES ON SATURDAY AT GULFSTREAM! $29.40 BEST WINNER ROMPS!!
$185.40 Exacta over 3rd choice. Here was my writeup:#6 SALDANHA (Race 5) Cape Town filly has hit the board in 3 of 4 trips to post with her best coming on the grass. Was moved to the barn of trainer Kathleen O'Connell at the end of last year and looking for a much improved runner when she returns to action today. This barn is at their best when developing young turf horses and need only look to the two horse in today's race to see what they can do. Filly has already proven can handle the turf having won her debut at Colonial Downs followed by a second place finish in the 60k Tippett stake but both came while going 5 1/2 furlongs. Considering she shows only one average work for new barn you can bet they have been giving her long gallops in the a.m. to build stamina and have her relax. Giving her the nod going a mile now with Lezcano taking the call only a positive sign considering he has won at a clip of 50% riding for barn here at Gulfstream.
ON A ROLL LAST 2 DAYS AT TAMPA!!10 TOP Winners from 21 Races. 3 Best Bets score at: $9.80 $8.40 and $4.20. Saturday's selections are now available.

HORSES TO WATCH AND BIAS INFORMATION
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
I HAVE NO HORSES TO WATCH FROM TODAY. NO BIAS ON THE DIRT OR GRASS COURSES. RACE TEN OBSERVATIONS TO FOLLOW.
*** RACE TEN ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 3) DUCLAW 5yo needs frequent breaks but has finished 2nd or better in 10 of his 14 srarts. He survived a roughly run stretch drive to beat a field like this last time. He now goes from Young to Nick Leggio who gives him 8 weeks to reload. Only one recent work but this barn can win off a short layoff. (# 9) SEVENTY TWO RENO 6yo now goes to Bourgeois after being unable to win in his 3 starts for Autrey. Interestingly, the blinkers that Autrey added for those 3 starts come off today. Not a frequent winner but a solid performer that should be in the hunt. (# 2) RUN OVER ME RADE 5yo fires virtually every time and has been a popular item at the claim box. He goes to Herman Ladner following a sharp win under these exact conditions. This is a negative barn switch, but this tough veteran can't be ignored. Goes from Bourque to Campbell. (# 6) ULAH TYSON opened up as the 3-1 favorite dropping back to $5,000. Certainly can win this, but has never run 1st or 2nd in six starts over this course. Solid 3f work Feb 9, best of 15 which indicates his fitness. Will be on or near the early lead. (# 7) GOODBYE EXCAVATE makes 1st start off the Calhoun claim which is always a dangerous angle. Has a good win record. Rider change to Jacinto who forms a deadly trainer and rider combination. VERY TRICKY RACE!
RACE NINE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
I have no idea what these riders think when they can allow 7-1 winner LOVE TO TELL to steal off to the lead setting fractions slower than I have seen in quite some time. For MIZZCAN’TBEWRONG and Jesus Castanon who loves the front end, to allow the winner to set those kind of fractions, was just handing that one the victory. These two ran 1-2 around the track as the closers had no chance to finish. The exacta paid $156.00.
*** RACE NINE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 4) MERIBEL Found the G2 San Gorgonio at Santa Anita too tough in her first start for trainer Mark Casse. This mare is a cut below the best but she is a very tough nut in non-graded company. She has finished in-the-money several times against the big girls. She beat an allowance field of about this class at Keeneland and missed narrowly in the Kentucky Cup distaff. Has a class edge here. (# 7) SHYTOE LAFEET Will be glad not to see Stormy West in the gate after being beaten by that mare in her last two. She is in top form, loves this course and is a snug class fit. She will also be the favorite. Tough mare from the Larry Jones barn will be hard to beat. (# 8) NAN’S JOY Closed to finish a distant 3rd behind Stormy West and Shytoe Lafeet in her first of the meet. She closed strongly to beat allowance fillies last time, a race that should have her in top form. She covered the final quarter in :23 3/5 after stalking a slow pace. She was a listed stakes winner in Europe. (# 1) SHARBAT is 2-2 over the FG grass, but is -3 at the 1 1/8 mile distance. Comes off a game win, but has never strung 2 winning efforts together. The rail helps. (# 6) MIZZCAN'TBEWRONG is the speed of this race. If able to slow down the pace, he could be a danger but he is questionable at the 1 1/8 mile distance.
RACE EIGHT OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
NOTE: I HOPE YOU KEPT YOUR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET AS I SUGGESTED. TAKING THAT SHORT OF AN EXACTA IS NOT PRUDENT. THERE ARE BETTER WAYS TO INVEST YOUR MONEY. AT $6.00 I WOULD HAVE BET (AND LOST) BUT ANYTHING LOWER I WANTED NO PART OF.
1-5 shot HIGH TAP had to work harder than I expected to pass OH SO CLEVER who held on well while setting a moderate pace. It was well back to FOREST QUEEN who had perfect position turning for home, but came up completely empty in the stretch is a very disappointing effort.

RACE EIGHT BETTING ACTION
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
IF TAKING EVEN MONEY ON AN EXACTA IS YOU CUP OF TEA, YOU HAVE ONE RIGHT HERE. THE 5-3 EXCATA IS PAYING JUST THAT. I WOULD HAVE BET THIS NUMBER IF IT WAS PAYING $6.00 WHICH WOULD NEVER HAPPEN. EVEN THOUGH THE RESULT SHOULD BE IN THIS ORDER, PERSONALLY I WILL WATCH THE RACE WITH MY HANDS IN MY POCKET.
*** RACE EIGHT ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 5) HIGH TAP Gray Tapit filly showed lots of promise in her debut when she finished 2nd in a highly rated sprint. She delivered that promise when sent a mile in her 2nd start. She stalked the early pace then just dusted the field down the lane. She looks like a major bargain as a $72,000 yearling. Beats these easily on her way to stakes competition. NOTE:TRAINER ASMUSSEN SCRATCHED ONE FOR JIM WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SECOND CHOICE, BECAUSE HE KNEW SHE COULD NOT BEAT HIGHTAP WHO OPENED UP 1-9 ODDS. NO HORSE IS WORTH THAT PRICE, BUT I MUST ADMIT SHE SHOULD EASILY WIN THIS AS THE CONTROLLING SPEED. (# 3) FOREST QUEEN Forestry filly has shown ability on dirt, turf and poly. Her only try on dirt was a 3rd place finish behind One For Jim two starts back. She comes off a neck defeat against a relatively soft field on the lawn. Has a chance to complete the exotics. I HAVE NO FEELING FOT THE OTHERS IN WHAT LOOKS LIKE A VERY SMALL EXACTA IN THE VICINITY OF $4.00 TO $5.00 DOLLARS.
RACE SEVEN OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(9-2) showed a change of tactics today rating in mid pack. Good sustained rally widest through the stretch and was able to get the nod over PURSUE THE DREAM who stalked a 50-1 quitter. Took over at the 1/16th pole but was unable to hold off the winner in a gritty effort. MISTER FUSAICHI passed tired horses late for a no threat 3rd.
*** RACE SEVEN ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 4) POLARITY Returned from a 6-month layoff to finish fast in a Jan. 2 sprint against tough optional claimers. He dropped to this level last out and finished a close 3rd in another sprint. Sider has him set to stretch out now in his 3rd start off the layoff. Won going a mile over this course last year. (# 2) PURSUE A DREAM Finished a fast closing 2nd when getting a needed class drop last time. He was forced to break from the extreme outside and covered the final quarter in :24 2/5, fast time for this deep course. Had been in too tough in his first 3 starts following the Bourgeois claim. (# 6) MISTER FUSAICHI Sliding down the class ladder in search of his current win level. His first start of the meet was a dull effort when dropped to $30,000. Asmussen wheels him back in 12 days in the easiest spot of his career. The "for sale" sign is out and the drop may wake him up.
RACE SIX OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
3-1 second choice LOUISIANA DUDE blew away the field, setting the pace right from the start. Longshot (# 10) PRINCE SLEW THREE came up the rail to snatch 2nd on the tiring 9-5 favorite THEODORE WAYS.
RACE SIX EQUIPMENT CHANGES
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
FRONT BANDAGES ON FOR (# 4) SUNSET DELIGHT AND (# 11) DR THUNDER T. FRONTS OFF FOR (# 1) TIGER IN THE BAG AND (# 2) WRONG WAY BUBBA
*** RACE SIX ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 9) SILVER STORM DAY After losing twice as the favorite he got his maiden win last time. The fractions were honest and the final time faster than par. Showed much improved late energy in that win and has the preferred stalking style. Mildly preferred in a tough race. Switches to Hernandez as Albarado opts to stay with Theodore Ways. (#12) THEODORE WAYS 5yo hit the board in his first 10 starts while earning consistently good figures. He finally got the elusive maiden win when returning from a 5-month layoff last time. Former rider Mark Guidry has won with 2 of his 6 starters here. Dangerous right back with Albarado returning. (# 6) SECRET BRUSH Beat Delta Downs maidens after being off the track for more than a year. Found $20,000 claimers to be way too tough in his first start with winners. He dueled for command early but stopped abruptly in the lane. This significant class drop makes him a top contender. (# 5) LOUISIANA DUDE Beat maidens easily when dropped to the basement on New Year's Day. He appeared well placed in his first with winners but tired after stalking the pace for a half. That was against a relatively tough field, so he could go better here. Reunited with Torres who won on him.
*** MID DAY BIAS UPDATE ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
THERE IS NO BIAS ON DIRT OR GRASS THROUGH FIVE RACES
RACE FIVE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
Did not matter at all that the pace was slower than slow. MAN NAMED SUE (4-1) Sat in mid pack. Made a strong wide rally from mid pack to challenge for the lead top of the stretch. Finally edged clear AT THE 1/16TH pole and held on despite drifting out late. SALIC LAW closed from off the pace to close inside the winner, but could not gain late. Winner had the jump on him which helped against this pace. NORTHERN SCENE set a snail pace under light pressure. No resistance to top 2 late, but held 3rd as a result of the pace. Favorite GOLD SOUND had no excuse at all after stalking the pace. Had no response at the 1/16th pole then finished evenly in a disappointing effort.
*** RACE FIVE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 3) GOLD SOUND Late runner beat several of these two starts back. Last out the mid-pack closer was hurt by being rated several lengths off a slow pace. He was unable to gain the needed ground despite an excellent final 5/16 in :29 3/5. Figures to get a more honest pace to set up his late run. Lanerie has been Stidham's main go-to rider. (# 2) MAN NAMED SUE Exchanged decisions with Gold Sound in his last two and will fight it out with that rival once again. Claimed from Lovelle by Cody Autrey, an upgrade although Autrey is not as dominant on the grass as he is on the main track. 5yo has tactical speed and has the versatility to be placed where jock Theriot sees fit. (# 7) WHATA YA MEAN 5yo won easily when he was dropped into conditioned claiming company in his first start of the meet. He had a rather soft trip stalking a slow pace. He tired in deep stretch when trying tougher open claimers last time. He had an easy lead on another slow pace. He is the speed of this field and drops to his lowest level. Likely favorite could easily win it. (# 4) SALIC LAW drops back to $17,500, the level of his 2 sharp seconds off the trainer changeDec 18 and Jan 5. Main question is if he can be effective stretching out to 1 1/16 miles. Appears best at a mile. (# 8) NORTHERN SCENE Takes a smart and realistic drop to $1,500 for the 1st time. Has not won in over 2 years and I bothered by the fact that he is in for $15,500, not the full $17,500. Positive is that he comes from a very hot barn.
RACE FOUR OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
7-5 favorite DOT’S IMP rallied from well back while wide throughout to get the nod despite wearing front bandages for the 1st time. Wore down a game QUAZAR who chased a quick pace but was unable to hold off the winner while 2nd best. EMBARRASSED raced in mid pack. Had every change to get 2nd, but hung in the final 100 yards. Pulled up “ouchy” and is a clear bet against next time out. The rest were no factor.
FRONTS ON IN RACE FOUR
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 6) EMBARASSED and (# 7) DOT'S IMP ARE WEARING FRONT BANDAGES FOR THE FIRST TIME OFF A LAYOFF. THIS IS SOMETHING I DON'T LIKE TO SEE.
*** RACE FOUR ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 7) DOT’S IMP In his first start of the winter the 5yo stalked the pace to the stretch against a powerful key race field at the $30,000 level. This is a significant class drop and he seems sure to improve with a race under his belt. Ran several races at Louisiana Downs that would make him the winner here. Four strong drills since that last race have him on edge. (# 4) QUAZAR Cuts back to a sprint following 3 routes, 2 of them on the grass. Now a 4yo, he was a talented and promising 2yo before going down with an injury in September 2007. He is actually sharper than he looks due to the changes in distance and surface. Wheels back in 6 days for Desormeaux, a profitable maneuver for this barn. (# 6) EMBARRASSED Gets two months to rebound following a dull effort on the grass. Three drills since Feb. 1 are a positive sign. Ran a big race at Churchill two starts back when making his 2nd start off a long layoff. Will be reunited with Lanerie who rode him to his only win. (# 5) ARMORED Certainly is dangerous off the drop but has never run on the dirt in 11 starts. Works at FG have been ok.
RACE THREE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
8-5 favorite MUFFIN raced in mid pack. Came widest in the drive and wore down TOKEN DIVA (2nd) and MY STORMY ANGEL (3rd) in the final yards. Both those 2 rivals closed well late as the speed backed up at the 1/16th pole. CARELESS RAPTURE had dead on the speed turning for home. Had no excuse.
BLINKERS ON IN RACE THREE
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 2) MUFFIN, 9-5 choice with 10 minutes to go, adds blinkers for the 1st time today.
*** RACE THREE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 2) MUFFIN Smart Strike filly is starting to look like a trial maiden with 6 straight close-up finishes. She was beaten at 2-5 last time but the time was fast and the filly who beat her came back to win an allowance. She handled the lawn well in her only opportunity. The blinkers that go on today could be the key. She has a sizeable figure edge here and deserves one more chance. (# 10) CARELESS RAPTURE Entrepreneur filly has finished 2nd in all 3 starts, two sprints and a route. It was surprising to see her cut back to 5 1/2F last time after she finished strongly going a mile. Not sure what Herbert is doing with her but she is quite capable at any distance. Enters off a strong 5F drill on Feb. 13. (# 8) TOKEN DIVA Stalked the pace and held on well for 3rd, just behind Careless Rapture, in a turf sprint. Finished close in both sprints, so she should have the foundation that she needs to stretch out. Her grandsires are the great Mr. Prospector and turf route influence Rahy. (# 6) MY STORMY ANGEL Filly was the highest priced offspring of Storm Day to sell at auction. She finished an even 3rd in her debut on the grass then ran into a freak out winner on the main track last time. Think she will show further improvement in her 3rd start. Will try Graham this time. (# 4) GYPSY CAMP Gets a trainer change to Hodges who is good with new acquisitions.Makes 1st start on grass hipping in from New York. Has some turf pedigree on her dam side. (# 7) MARSH ANGEL ran a good 3rd in turf debut as a 1st time starter at the FG. Showed good speed that day but set a very slow pace. Will have to run faster early today which could be her undoing. (# 9) DESTINY BOUND was hurt by a wide trip and a slow pace in last. Good 3rd in debut sprinting over soft turf. Must overcome a tough outside post and probably another wide trip.
RACE TWO OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
Once again the 2 favorites run 1-2 in exact order and both were tons best of the rest. 8-5 winner CITY DANCING was rated well on a clear lead. Had enough left to hold off a stiff challenge from DOLLAR COTTON who sat a perfect inside-out trip but was just not good enough.
*** RACE TWO ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
(# 4) CITY DANCING Given 4 1/2 months off by Mike Burgess following a turf experiment in which she finished 4th in a strung out field. She has been given 9 drills in the last 9 weeks with several 5-6F stamina moves. In her only dirt route she just missed the place behind a long gone winner. With She's The Heat she gives Burgess a formidable uncoupled entry. (# 1) DOLLAR COTTON Makes 1st start in a claimer and back with State Breds after being way overmatched in an open stake last out. Will be on or near the lead from the start. Makes her 2nd start off a layoff which should have her sharper. (# 6) GO LESLIE GO has decent form at 2 turns which many of these do not have. Main problem is that she has lost grounds in all 3 of her route starts and has not run 1st or 2nd in 5 starts at the Fair Grounds. Against this weak field, she is clearly a main contender.
RACE ONE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
Top 2 finishers and betting choices in reverse order, tons best of the rest. 9-5 winner MY ELLE PRADA raced on rail until moving outside for the stretch drive. Battled through the lane with 6-5 favorite CORRINE out finishing that one in the final few yards. Corrine had no excuse not scoring, after stalking bad speed and taking lead at the top of the lane. My Elle Prada was claimed by Asmussen. 3 claims in for Corrine. Not sure who won the shake for this 5 year old mare.
*** RACE ONE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 21, 2009
( #4) CORRINE Has shown vast improvement in her last 2 starts adding blinekrs. She has raced 3 times over a distance ground. Twice they were against far tougher than she is facing on Saturday. On January 4th, Corrine was back at 2 turns. The result was an easy win. She showed much improved speed and a strong finish. In her last start, this 5 year old mare was cut back to 6 furlongs, scoring her 2nd straight victory. High percentage trainer Tim Glynshaw enters Corrine back at 2 turns at the 1 mile distance. She figures to race in mid-pack and attack at the 1/4 pole. She is clearly in the sharpest form of any of her 5 rivals which is why Glynshaw steps her up to $7,500. Jockey Curt Bourque has been aboard in both her wins. 2 of her 6 career wins have been at Fair Grounds. (# 1) MY ELLE PRADA 7yo mare who needs frequent breaks has been nicely managed by Larry Robideaux. She hit the board in 8 of her last 10 and comes off a game deat-heat on Jan. 4. She has the back class to handle this tougher assignment. With three recent drills she should run well off the 7-week break. (# 6) BAD BEAT 5yo has won 3 of her 9 starts over this course and has never been sharper. She was taking a big class drop when she closed with a late rush to dead-heat with My Elle Prada last time. The pace figures to be fast enough to set up her closing move. In light with apprentice Dugas back aboard. (# 3) Punish Work has been facing State breds. Has run well in open company in the past but the main question is if she can be effective going 2 turns as sprinting has been her best game. (# 5) DREAMSFOREVER Returns off a 2 1/2 month layoff after defeating weaker against much tougher than these. In his favor is that he loves the distance and the Fair Grounds. Shows an excellant work at Evangeline Jan 21 and comes from a good barn. Certainly can be used in exotics at an expected big price.
