RACE TEN OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
8-5 favorite RIGHTEOUS BROTHER sat in mid pack. Blew by the tiring speed at the 1/8th pole and was much the best giving trainer Asmussen and rider Bridgmohan their 3rd win of the day. CAJUN RED rallied from well back to be second, well clear of the rest.

*** RACE TEN ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 2) ISABELLA SYMPHONY Pressed all the way and missed by less than a length in a $10,000 claimer. He goes from Autrey to Michelle Lovelle, not exactly an upgrade but Lovell is a solid conditioner. She has the veteran gelding well spotted in a state-bred allowance that may actually be easier. Can win it at a square price if he holds his form for the new barn. (# 3) ALL STAR CHRIS Was last seen beating LaD maidens by 10 widening lengths in September. Although he shows just one slow breeze you can be sure trainer Cecil Borel has him well prepared at the farm. It is significant that Albarado takes the call. This one could come back in top form. (# 8) RIGHTEOUS BROTHER Returned from a year on the sidelines to finish 2nd as the favorite under these conditions. He could move forward with recency but there is no guarantee. Two useful drills since his last start are a plus. Another live one for Asmussen and Bridghoman. (# 4) BIG EXPECTATIONS Takes a class jump following his strong win over a field of conditioned claimers. 5yo continues to improve and could easily be this good at present. The late runner may not get the hot fractions that he would prefer. (# 9) CAJUN RED lost all chance in last when bumped and wide all the way. Out of “key” race 2 starts back. Strong maiden win 3 back over this course off a layoff.
RACE NINE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
8-1 winner WANNA CUDDLE, making her grass debut, sustained a nice wide closing rally to be much the best. TENSAS PALMYRA got the jump on the winner but was unable to keep pace in the last 1/16th of a mile. Tensas came out in deep stretch bumping SEVEN SEVENTY THREE off stride. There was an inquiry but the stewards left the same order of finish. SUNDAY IN THE BAY cluncked up for a well beaten 3rd. Top 2 were much the best of the rest.
*** RACE NINE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
NOTE: THIS RACE IS SIMILAR TO THE 7TH, AS MANY IN HERE HAVE NEVER RUN ON THE GRASS. 7 OF THE 9 FILLIES IN HERE ARE MAKING THEIR TURF DEBUT WHICH MAKES THIS RACE VERY DIFFICULT.
(# 5) TENSAS PALMYRA showed nothing when sent off at even money in her debut but came up big at a mile in her 2nd start. She stalked the pace then drove to the lead and bounded clear. Her final quarter in :24 4/4 was excellent for a newly-turned 3yo filly over this course. Afternoon Deelites filly has unlimited potential and is a half to turf stakes winner Tensas Yucatan. (# 4) LIGHTLIGHTLIGHT Will be glad not to see Warrior Maid in the gate after chasing that filly home in her last three. She earned a big figure on New Year's Day when she finished 2nd to Warrior Maid in a fast race. There was a gap of 12 lengths back to the pack. She was going strongly at the wire at 7F last time and should handle the two turns. Her sire, Whywhywhy, is a top rated turf influence. Another live runner from the Asmussen barn. (# 6) WANNA CUDDLE Late runner won a small stakes at LaD and has never missed the board. She does not have a lot of grass in her bloodlines but the granddaughter of Seattle Slew should enjoy the route. If this race stays on turf it becomes a crap shoot as none of the contenders are proven on the lawn. (# 9) SEVEN SEVENTYTHREE Stretches out for the first time following a 7F tightener at Delta Downs. Like may of the others her turf breeding is questionable. However, both of her wins came on polytrack. Runners who like the artificial surfaces often transfer their form to the grass. (# 1) HAZEL GROVE Could improve back on the grass. Lone turf start was in her debut going 2 turns against open company maidens. Will be the inside speed with new rider Albarado aboard. Bred for grass on her dam side.

RACE EIGHT OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
2-1 second choice SIMPLIFY took back racing behind 6-5 favorite MARYVILLE. Maryville made the first run towards the lead at the top of the stretch with the winner tracking right behind. Maryville took a clear lead until deep stretch when hooked by that rival to her outside. Unable to keep pace late. Both were tons best of the rest.
*** RACE EIGHT ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) MARYVILLE Makes her third career start on Saturday. She was entered on the grass in her debut and the result was a solid 2nd place finish, beaten a head, to the quality filly Fleet Streak. That filly returned on Tuesday to run a strong 2nd to Selva who is a multiple stakes winner. Maryville broke her maiden by 4 lengths under a hand ride Jan 30. She defeated a well meant Larry Jones 1st timer who was odds on. Maryville forced a blazing pace. Her final time was very fast for that maiden special weight condition. She has shown in both starts that she can rate behind the speed then attack on the turn. On Saturday, Maryville is the 2nd choice on the morning line behind the 2-1 favorite Simplify who returns off a long layoff. I feel she has a conditioning edge and a strong race over the track is a major plus. (# 3) JENIFEE Menifee filly was well bet in her debut for a $50,000 tag and responded with a professional win from off the pace. Surprisingly, she was claimed by Tim Glyshaw. Not many maidens are claimed for this amount from their debut. She stalked a hot pace then gunned down the leader in the stretch. A dangerous longshot for a high % barn. (# 2) TIME WELL SPENT In her first start as a 3yo she cut out a blazing pace and held on for the place behind a fast filly. She had the very promising Jones runner Bhangaloo Ruby behind her in 3rd. Figures to be sent to the lead once again and should hold on better with that last one behind her. A fast half mile breeze since raced lessens the chance of a bounce. (# 8) SIMPLIFY Showed plenty of promise last year when she won her Churchill debut then missed narrowly in a G3 stakes. She had gaps between each of her 3 starts and has not been seen since August. She is obviously good enough to win it if Asmussen has her in top form off the long layoff. Works have been regularly spaced slow breezing drills. Would expect at least one work where she was asked for speed.
RACE SEVEN OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
As I stated this race was a real crap shoot and the 15-1 upset winner MILWAUKEE MIRACLE proved this fact rallying from last to blow by the field while saving ground then angling out widest at the top of the stretch. He has one of the 5 in here making 1st start on grass. SMOOTHCIDECUP sat a perfect trip stalking a contested pace. Moved to lead at the perfect time in mid stretch, but was unable to hold off the winner. The favorite HEAR NO ANGEL sat in mid pack. Angled out the 1/8th pole, then had no rally to finish 3rd.
WAGERING PATTERNS RACE 7
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
JUST AS I SAID THIS WAS A VERY COMPETITIVE AND TRICKY RACE, THE BOARD ALSO POINTS THIS OUT. A REAL CRAP SHOOT HERE.
*** RACE SEVEN ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
NOTE: VERY TRICKY RACE AS 5 OF THE 8 HORSES ENTERED IN THIS GRASS ROUTE HAVE NEVER RACED ON TURF AS WELL AS GOING TWO TURNS.
(# 7) HEAR NO ANGEL Finished 2nd in his debut then won his next three under a variety of conditions. He won a dirt sprint, a dirt route and a turfer at 7 1/2 furlongs. In his 6F win two on Jan. 2 he was 10 lengths behind with a furlong to go. His final 1/8 fraction was an eye-catching :11 3/5. Bridgmohan has handled him quite nicely. (# 8) DABBERS CHIEF Finished 2nd in his debut then won his next three under a variety of conditions. (# 6) SMOOTHCIDEUP Made a belated move and was going fastest at the wire when he missed by 3/4 length to Hear No Angel. He looked good blasting LaD maidens on the main track four starts back. Look for Jamie Theriot to keep him in closer touch early. A projected fast pace gives him a chance to kick them down in the drive. (# 1A) SHOCKIN BLOW Made a belated move and was going fastest at the wire when he missed by 3/4 length to Hear No Angel. He looked good blasting LaD maidens on the main track four starts back. Look for Jamie Theriot to keep him in closer touch early. A projected fast pace gives him a chance to kick them down in the drive. (# 1) SILENT PIPE Not bred for the grass but steps up in class off a strong win. Draws the rail which helps, but I do prefer his entry mate.

RACE SIX OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
1-5 winner DUBAI MAJESTY ran to his short price, easily winning from off the pace. 2nd finisher GENIVER sat a perfect stalking trip behind a contested pace. Took lead at the top of the stretch, but that was short lived. Geniver was much the best of the rest.
RACE SIX EQUIPMENT CHANGE
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 5) the 1-5 favorite DUBAI MAJESTY runs with front bandages back on. Did wear them to victory 3 starts back.
*** RACE SIX ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 5) DUBAI MAJESTY Filly is multiple graded stakes placed and comes off a strong 2nd place finish in the Sunshine Millions Sprint. She handled this course well when finishing mid-pack against a tough field in the Dec. 20 Esplanade. She worked fast since shipping back from Gulfstream. Holds a clear class edge in this 2nd tier allowance. Her only off track race was a dull effort in the slop a year ago. She is a lot sharper than that now. (# 7) SWEETNESS ‘N LIGHT Has split her time between turf, dirt and polytrack. Her best race was her 2nd place finish over this course three starts back, a race rained off the turf. She has also been tried at a variety of distances but has the look of a natural sprinter. The daughter of Distorted Humor is bred to love a wet track. (# 3) MS. OFFICER ROCKET Consistent 4 year old has good tactical speed, likes this course and distance
RACE FIVE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
11-1 upset winner MISA raced covered up between horses in mid pack. Blocked full of run to mid stretch until angling out 1/8th pole, then wore down the leaders late. Good debut for SIRRAH who rallied from well back then between horses from the top of the stretch to the wire. Just outfinished by the winner. SUMMERS EDGE forced the pace from the start. Gave way grudgingly in the late stages. 9-5 favorite GET A VICTORY was allowed to drop back well off the pace. Sustained a wide rally from the turn to nearing the wire, and then could not punch it in the last 70 yards.
SHOE REPAIR RACE FIVE
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 10) OUR ROYAL SAINT lost her right front shoe entering the paddock. Will have a repair in his stall before being saddled.
*** RACE FIVE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) GET A VICTORY Victory Gallop filly is ready for her diploma following two fine 2nd place finishes. In her most recent start she dueled for command through blazing fractions and continued strongly despite losing the advantage at the top of the stretch. With need-to-lead type Way Too High drawn on the inside jock Carlos Gonzalez figures to get a garden spot stalking trip. Continues to look better each time out for high % trainer Bret Calhoun and draws a soft assignment. (# 3) HYPER HANNAH Prized filly raced evenly to finish a distant 3rd in her sprint debut. Clearly a prep, that effort sets her up to stretch out this afternoon. Trainer Ralph Nicks does well with 1st time routers and Hyper Hannah is bred for the trip. In light with apprentice Dugas back aboard. (# 2) SUMMERS EDGE Stalked the pace, made a 3-wide move to take command a furlong out but could not hold it. She missed by just a length and is on an improving pattern. Worked well since her last start with the best drill a near-bullet breezing half on Feb. 20. Retains Robby Albarado. (# 1) WAY TOO HIGH Was finished after 6F last time, apparently done in by a :22 4/5 opening quarter. In her previous start she set the pace and held on well. She was beaten just a length by a next-out repeat winner. Drops to the bottom while switching to Hernandez.
RACE FOUR OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
Albarado triples aboard the beautiful looking DON’T SHOOT who scores impressively as the 9-5 favorite making his turf debut. Rated behind the speed on the outside. Sustained a strong steady rally from the top of the stretch, then drew off willingly the last 1/8th despite racing greenly late. EVACUATION ROUTE rallied boldly from last, closing for a good 2nd behind a quality runner. WESLINN picked up a tiring PERSIAN who had no excuse whatsoever.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE RACE FOUR
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) DON'T SHOOT who makes his first start on grass, looks fantastic in the warm up with his head arched, beautiful coat and on his toes.
EQUIPMENT CHANGES IN RACE FOUR
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
First timer (# 2) EVACUATION ROUTE wears froint bandages for his debut which is a BIG negative. Also a gelding not a colt as stated in the PP'S. (# 5) BRUNELLESCHI adds fronts for the first time.
*** RACE FOUR ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) DON’T SHOOT In his debut he settled for a distant 3rd behind two very fast colts in an "off the turfer". Finished 4th, again against a key race field, when Neil HGoward tried him around two turns last time. $250,000 son of City Zip is coming up to a big race. His sire is an A-rated turf influence. He is a half to two turf winners including stakes winner Sleeping Indian. Two strong drills since his last start with Albarado up. (# 6) PERSIAN Comes off two 2nd place finishes under these exact conditions. He entered the final furlong with a clear lead last time but was caught at the wire. Peace Rules colt has been on the board in 7 of his 8 starts. Finished a sharp 3rd in the mud three starts back, so he is a strong contender on turf or dirt. (# 1) WESLINN Overcame a rough start to finish a fast closing 3rd in his 5F Calder debut. Tried at a mile last time, he stalked the pace for 6F while racing on the far outside. Worked fast prior to shipping over from Florida. The blinkers that go on today were likely worn for his fast drill on Feb. 20.
RACE THREE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
Favorites run 1-2 in exacta order and both were tons best of the rest. New gelding DAKOTA FLAME sat a perfect trip behind a 2 horse contested pace. Eased off the rail to go after DONNASWALKINDREAM and edged clear late in a stiff drive. This gave rider Albarado a tie in the jockey’s standing with Jamie Theriot.
NEW GELDINGS RACE THREE
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 2) OVERLAYED, (# 3) DAKOTA FLAME and (# 5) DODABOOM are all new geldings.
*** RACE THREE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 4) DONNASWALKINDREAM Stalked a slow pace, made a 3-wide move to the lead and drew clear a furlong out. He couldn't hold the lead but still managed to finish a clear 2nd. On an improving pattern for Hahn and could be set for his best in his 3rd start off the 3 1/2 month layoff. Graham stays with him. (# 3) DAKOTA FLAME Obscurely bred 5yo has been finishing steadily in his sprints and should go well around two turns. He has the energy distribution pattern of a middle distance runner. He drops from maiden special company, a class drop that is not as significant among state-breds. It is encouraging to see Albarado take the mount. (# 5) DODABOOM Appeared well placed dropping imto maiden claiming company last time but showed little. He has more ability than that and could show it today as the blinkers he has worn for his last 3 starts come off. Has speed to be in contention all the way. Contender in a very soft field.
RACE TWO OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
Another upset by 12-1 victor PLEASANT PACKY who raced covered up in mid pack until tipping out in mid stretch. Wore down pacesetter MY GOLD and edged clear. My Gold was well clear of the rest. Favorite SANTONIO was far back all the way. Poor effort. 2nd choice CHACAHOULA CHOICE was checked at the start finding himself in last place. Sustained a mild rally wide from the turn. Could not sustain it then finished up evenly. Tough trip. Early double returned $357.00.
ADDITIONAL CHANGE RACE TWO
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 5) CRIMSON WAY also removes front bandages for this.
RACE TWO EQUIPTMENT CHANGE
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) FLICKERING WORLD removes front bandages after a 9 1/2 length win last time out with the fronts on.
*** RACE TWO ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 10) CHACAHOULA CHOICE Got the tightener that he needed on Jan. 7 then turned in a fine effort that was even better than it appears. After breaking awkwardly he was forced to chase the pacesetter from the start. He was steadied several times along the rail while full of run. Swung wide into the stretch to go after the leader, but could only hold 2nd in a game effort. Like him despite the outside post. Tries a rider switch from Bourque to Castanon. (# 11) SANTONIO Late running 4yo raced last, far off the pace as usual. He made up ground into the stretch, then came home quickest of them all for 3rd. He finished just a length behind Chacahoula Choice. Fires every time and should get an honest pace to rally into. The rider switch from D Meche to Graham may help. (# 7) FLICKERING WORLD Rebounded from a dull effort to score a booming win over basement non-winners twice. He also looked good finishing a close 3rd three starts back. Sam Breaux has brought the late blooming 4yo along nicely and he is likely to hold that good form. Came from far back in that last win but also has some tactical speed. (# 2) MY GOLD Had been in decent form but really put it together last time out in the slop. He set a strong pace, put away his pace rivals and drew clear. That was easily his career best. He had not moved up in the mud before, so that race did not appear to be wet track aided. Not sure he can put two of those together, but if he can he will be hard to beat. (# 6) FIVE STAR SECRET Has shown improvement in his last 2 starts stretching out to today’s mile distance. Tactical speed to sit a good trip. Gets weight from all with bug boy up.
RACE ONE OBSERVATIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
14-1 upset by CLASSIC ROBBERY who stalked quitting speed until taking command entering the stretch. Edged clear then held off AMERICAN HUSTLER in a game “wake up” effort. Bothe the favoeite LUNARPEAL and 2nd choice INNER LIGHT were both awful. HUNT TEX closed widest passing tired horses for a no threat third.
UPDATED WEATHER CONDITIONS
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
RAIN IS EXPECTED TODAY. (WITH 11 MINUTES TO GO FOR THE FIRST RACE, IT IS SPRINKLING). WHEN AND HOW MUCH CANNOT BE PREDICTED AT THIS TIME. STAY TUNED FOR ANY CHANGE OF TRACK CONDITIONS! GRASS RACES COULD BE SWITCHED TO THE MAIN TRACK IN THE EVENT OF HEAVY RAINS.
*** RACE ONE ANALYSIS ***
by The Wizard on Saturday, February 28, 2009
(# 7) LUNARPEAL New Mexico shipper could make little impact on the winner who was on a long lead throughout but finished steadily for the place. Hit the board in 6 of his last 7 against this kind and better in the southwest. This one can move forward now that he has a race over the track. Asmussen will retain his main go-to rider Shaun Bridgmohan. (# 6) INNER LIGHT $650,000 son of Songandaprayer was regarded highly enough as a 3yo starter in last spring's Wood Memorial. Last out he was rated at the back of the pack behind a walking pace and did well to finish a distant 3rd. Mott adds the hood for the first time in the colt's 17th start. P Val back aboard. (# 3) AMERICAN HUSTLER Oaklawn shipper drops into the easiest spot of his career for Asmussen. He has not been as sharp recently as he was last fall but still is dangerous here. He missed by just 3 lengths in a tougher spot last time out. Draws barn's 2nd string rider Erik McNeil. (# 1) HOLIDAZE Comes off 2 poor races off the layoff, but could improve taking a sharp drop in class and a rider change to Albarado.

This analysis will be posted no later than ten minutes to post. Once the horses are in the paddock, and enter the track for the post parade, I will post any observations that I feel are important. I will always keep you informed if I notice any betting patterns. Following the race, after I watch the pan shot as well as the head on, I will point out important trips and horses to watch when they run back, only if I have a strong opinion. I will keep you abreast of any prevailing track bias throughout the day. Following the day’s program, I will list those horses, which might be good betting opportunities the next time they run back.
NOTE: I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY COMMENTS YOU MIGHT HAVE ON “LIVEWITHTHEWIZARD”. JUST GO TO THE BOTTOM OF ANY PAGE WHICH HAS BEEN POSTED, AND CLICK ON THE FEEDBACK BUTTON. YOU CAN WRITE YOUR COMMENTS THERE. THANK YOU.
