HORSES TO WATCH
RACE SEVEN (1) I'M FROM DIXIE - Never really had clear sailing until very late. Probably would have won with a clean trip.
FINAL TRACK BIAS
No bias on dirt. All three races on soft turf were won by closers.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE ELEVEN
(11) MONEY LINE scores at 2-1, giving trainer Gulick his 2nd straight win, the last in the stake. Chased 0-39 horse in 2nd. Grinding run to wear down that rival then held off longshot BARCARO at the wire who closed widest from well off the pace. 0-39 MISTER EXETERA could not have received a better ride, setting a moderate pace. Looked like he could finally break through today, but lugged in late and tired. May never break maiden after this perfect trip. Rest had nothing.
POST PARADE FOR RACE 11
(3) BUCK SARGENT adds fronts for the first time.
BETTING ACTION FOR RACE 11
Wide open board with 18 minutes to go with (1) FORCED ACTION THE 7-2 favorite.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE TEN
Great ride by Karlson on 23-1 upset winner (7) SNAPPHOK who sat on the rail throughout. Split horses late easng out between horses, and won comfortably. (2) TELLING rated outside winner. Was beaten to the move by that one in mid stretch. Jock looked for opening at the 1/8th pole, steadying slightly, then came on through but it was too late. (3) TIGER WOODMAN raced outside backstretch and turn. Angled out widest top of the stretch. Loomed late, but could not sustain rally.
POST PARADE/WARM UP FOR RACE TEN
(3) TIGER WOODMAN looks great warming up!
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS
(2) TELLING - Made a nice appearance in the paddock. Continues to be bet heavily at 8-5. (1) MINISTER'S JOY - Adds front bandages for the first time off a trainer change Roussel.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE NINE
(8) WILDEYESOUTHERNBOY - rallied strongly between rivals around the far turn, soundly bumped with another runner turning for home, recovered nicely to sustain his bid, drew away to a daylight lead and then held a safe margin to the finish. (4) BIG RUSHLET - Circled runners around the far turn while far back, continued to make up ground in the stretch, and then finished strongly late without threatening the winner. (9) PUBLISH - closed belatedly while widest of all in the stretch to pass tired horses and collected the show.
BETTING AT THE OPEN IN RACE TEN
(# 2) TELLING and (# 3) TIGER WOODMAN both opened up as the 8-5 co-favorites.The rest of the field is between 5-1 and 15-1
BIG OVER WEIGHT RACE NINE
(# 7) PROUD JEFE is 5 Lbs over weight. Now toting 120 Lbs
BETTING ACTION IN RACE NINE
The # 8 continues to be the heavy favorite at 7-5. The rest of the field is well spread out in the betting.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE NINE
All horses look good in the paddock.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE EIGHT
(5) PAISANO CREEK - without speed while saving ground, continued along the rail down the backstretch, waited for racing room until the stretch and then overhauled the leaders with powerful strides to win going away. (1) TURNPIKE TOMMY - just off the pace while directly behind the frontrunner down the backstretch towards the rail, was angled off the inside when going after that rival in earnest on the turn, collared and then eventually bested that rival, but was no match for the winner. (4) ONE TRUE THING - broke well to set a controlled and pedestrian pace while relaxed, held until the lead until turning into the lane and then gave way under pressure to finish third.
BETTING AT THE OPEN IN RACE NINE
(# 8) WILDEYDSOUTHERNBOY is a overwhelming 7-5 favorite over 9 other rivals. The board is well spread out after him.

WIDE OPEN BOARD RACE EIGHT
With 4 minutes to go, the favorite is 3-1, then spread after that. Very competitive race.
RACE EIGHT PADDOCK NOTES AND EQUIPMENT CHANGE
All horses looked good in the paddock. (# 2) GARBURETOR gets front bandages back on. No negative as he wore them when he broke his maiden 2 starts back.
RACE SEVEN TRIP NOTES
(5) FLEET DYNA - Outrun after the start, lodged a wide and sustained bid while racing widest of all on the turn and again upon entering the stretch, “lugged in” a bit to bother another rival, continued to rally and then finished best of all to score by a daylight margin. (1) I’M FROM DIXIE - Broke well from the rail, was content to stalk the pace along the inside, remained ‘bottled up’ behind runners while crying out for racing room on the turn, still lacked clear sailing until deep stretch, and then finished with interest between runners for second and in all likelihood was best. (12) DIGNIFIED AIR - Raced three-wide under a rating hold while disputing the pace, responded well when set down for the drive, and continued on well to the finish and just failed to save the place late.
BETTING ACTION IN RACE EIGHT
(# 7) SAGAPONACK just got hit in the win pool from 9-2 to 5-2 with 13 minutes to go. He was 8-1 on the morning line.
BETTING ACTION ON THE OPEN IN RACE EIGHT
Second grass race of the day. This marks the start of the second Pick 4 of the day. Another wide open board after the 2-1 favorite (# 5) PAISANO CREEK. What makes this race so difficult is the lack of soft turf form among these ten horses. Only three, the favorite, # 7 and # 9 have a race over a "good" turf. Paisano has the best race over that type of course which was a good third place finish.
BETTING ACTION RACE SEVEN
With 4 minutes to go in race, the favorite is 9-2. This is a very hard race, as there are several 1st timers who have good pedigrees and trainers. This is a spread race if you are playing Pick 3's.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS AND BETTING ACTION(Race Seven)
Wide open betting continues with 6 minutes to go. Co-favorites both at 4-1. All horses looked very good in the paddock.
RACE SEVEN TRIP NOTES
(1) SOUTHERN ANTHEM - gathered back after an alert beginning, steadily improved his position along the inside down the backstretch, moved outside around the turn for a stretch bid, continued his sustained rally to bid for the lead in the stretch and then drew clear while running to his exceptional appearance in the paddock. (2) COOL C NOTE - sat a good stalking trip behind the early speed, moved three-wide to bid for the lead nearing the far turn under a hold, briefly resisted the winner in the stretch and was second best. (5) DANSEURS NOBLES - a bit fractious prior to the start, moved to the lead shortly after the break, set a pressured pace until midstretch, and then gave way to finish a distant third.
WRONG BLINKER INFORMATION IN RACE SEVEN
(# 6) SWEETEST LIL STAR is listed to wear blinkers today. That is incorrect. She wore blinkers in her last start.
TOTE BOARD AT THE OPENING OF RACE SEVEN
The board in race seven with 16 minutes to go is wide open. The favorite is 4-1. Very competitive 6 1/2 furlong race.
UPDATED BIAS THROUGH SIX RACES
Through six, I feel the track is playing honest. The rail is good, but you can rally and win from the outside.
RACE SIX BETTING ACTION
(# 1) Southern Anthem just took a hit to 8-5. Looked best in the paddock.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE SIX
(# 1) SOUTHERN ANTHEM looks excellant. The rest of the field show a good appearance.
RACE FIVE TRIPS
(7) WILD EXPECTATIONS - Raced towards the back of the pack early on, moved up rapidly between horses approaching the far turn, race four wide entering the stretch, and then slowly wore down the pacesetter to win drawing away late. (2) HELLO SAILOR - Moved up to set a controlled pace along the inside, maintained the lead towards the rail in the stretch, then held well when challenged by the winner and garnered the place under pressure. (4) THE REAL CHAS - Saved ground while in the second flight of runners, continued inside while making a bid into the stretch, had to be angled off the rail to sustain his rally and was one-paced late. (1) JOHNNIES BREEZE - raced without early speed, continued to be far back around the turn and lacked a late response when set down for the drive.
RACE SIX
This race is on the grass. The turf course is very soft.
HORSE BROKE THRU GATE PRIOR TO START
(# 5) WILLIE TO TO, broke thru gate and ran off a 1/16th of mile with jock on. Is being brought back to gate.
RACE FIVE OBSERVATIONS
With 4 minutes to go, I see nothing to note so far. Every horse is acting just fine.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE FIVE
All horses look ok.
EQUIPMENT CHANGE RACE FIVE
(# 4) The Real Chas adds blinkers. He has never raced on lasix in three career starts which don't see see much nowadays.
RACE FOUR TRIPS
(7) FRANCES SLAM - Settled off a 4-way battle for the early lead, was forced to steady when trying to split rivals on the turn, moved outside for a bid into the stretch between runners, and then closed best of all to win going away. (2) PALM BREEZE - Moved in tandem while outside the winner around the far turn and into the lane, was unable to keep pace with that rival in the stretch, and then finished willingly outside of runners to get second. (6) SAVY’S DELITE - trailed the field early, continued to be outrun into the stretch, and then made up ground belatedly between rivals without threatening the top pair. (1) RAVIN MANIAC - part of a four-horse speed duel for the lead down the backstretch, continued along the inside around the far turn, and then had nothing left for the drive.
UPDATED BIAS THROUGH THE FIRST 4 RACES
An off the pace runner just won race four, but it was more a case of the race falling apart late. I still feel the inside part of the track is very good.
LATE SCRATCH IN RACE SEVEN JUST ANNOUNCED
(# 10) SERGEANT CARTER in race seven is a late scratch.
RACE FOUR OBSERVATIONS
With 4 minutes to go, I have observed nothing of note.
RACE THREE TRIP NOTES
(4) BRUCE CARL - Dueled head and head for the lead along the inside into the stretch, put his pace nemesis away shortly thereafter, and then drew clear to win by a daylight margin. (9) VOW OF VENGEANCE - Well off the pace early on, made up ground willingly leaving the far turn, loomed boldly to challenge the winner in the stretch, but could not match strides late while second best. (6) IMA QUICK CAT - Dueled for the lead while racing two-wide into the stretch, and then gave way while tiring past midstretch. (1) COWBOYONTHERUN - badly outrun early, found his best stride in the stretch, and then was forced to check along the rail when lacking room late, which probably cost him the show.
COUNTRY ZIP A LATE SCRATCH
Country Zip will be examined by vet. HE IS A LATE SCRATCH
LOOSE HORSE BEHIND THE GATE
(# 10) COUNTRY ZIP ran off for a furlong and half after dumping rider. Will be reloaded. Big negative is he is allowed to run.
BETTING ACTION RACE THREE
(# 6) IMA QUICK CAT just took a hit to 9-5 with 5 minutes to go
PADDOCK NOTES RACE THREE
All horses look ok.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE TWO
(3) CALLER A CLASSIC - Was taken back to settle off the early pace shortly after the break, continued to race inside around the far turn into the stretch, leveled off suddenly past the eighth pole and then ran clear. (5) POWDER RIVER - outrun into the stretch, closed with a flourish in the final yards to take down the place. (8) THANKS LORD - moved outside of rivals leaving the far turn, continued to race in the middle of track while offering a stretch bid, then closed willingly late to take down the show. (1) DIGNA - set an uncontested lead just off the inside, held well until midstretch, tiring slowly in the final yards. (2) SUGAR SOUP - stalked the frontrunner into the lane and than gave way badly.

LATE BLINKER CHANGE RACE THREE
(# 4) BRUCE CARL adds blinkers for the first time. (not listed in any past performances, but announced at the track). This horse is trained by "sharp" connections.
POSSIBLE BIAS BREWING
Hard to tell at this point, but after two races, both winners came up the rail, and both had a stalking trip.
BETTING ACTION RACE TWO
Another wide open board with 5 minutes to go. The favorite is 3-1, with the longest price horse at 7-1. VERY competitive race.
TRIP NOTES FOR RACE ONE
(1) EXECUTIVE COACH - Sat a perfect stalking trip inside throughout, made a move along the rail to challenge for the lead in the stretch, got through and then edged clear late. (6) Y CHANCE IT - Raced in the 2nd flight of runners while saving ground, moved closer along the inside in the stretch, and then finished willingly for the place. (2) BISCUITS N BEER - Held gamely while setting a pressured pace along the inside to deep stretch, and then just managed to save the show. (3) NO TRIPPIN - Stalked the pace two-wide into the stretch, and then weakened under pressure.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE TWO
(# 7) ISLAND MISS gets front bandages back on. Has won with fronts in the past, so it is not a negative on this on.e. (# 5) POWDER RIVER Adds front bandages for the first time. This is a negative.
EARLY PICK 4
The first of two Pick 4's, begins in today's second race.
BETTING ACTION RACE ONE
(# 3) NO TRIPPIN just got a hit in the wiun pool from 7-2 to 5-2 with 5 minutes to post.
BETTING ACTION RACE ONE
With 6 minutes to go, the betting is spread out with the favorite at 7-2. The biggest price is 9-1. Obviously it is a very competitive race.

THE WIZARD GAZES INTO HIS CRYSTAL BALL
THE ARLINGTON PARK 2009 MEET.

Like it or not, synthetic surfaces are here stay. While that is not exactly a late breaking bulletin, acceptance is key. Because, at a some future date, your favorite track might just make the switch.

Arlington Park main track surface is Polytrack. While many handicappers simply refuse to play this ‘fake dirt’, I have found the surface at Arlington Park to play very fair. In 2008, the Arlington Park surface played quite uniformly with a nice blend of winners with all running styles. And, that could certainly change this year. Thus far at the new meet, the Polytrack surface has played from ‘honest’ to speed-favoring, certainly a far cry when these types of surfaces played more like turf than dirt.

Although the Arlington Park meet is still in its infancy, there are a few trainers that are wielding a very hot hand. Larry Rivelli, Christine Janks and Michael Stidham are off too a fast start at meet, with Rivelli boasting a 50% strike rate as of this writing. All six of Rivelli’s winners have come on the main track, with four of them in route contets. Conversely, Stidham has excelled in sprint events winning with four of his first five starts.

Like it or not, jockeys have a pronounced effect on the outcome of thoroughbred races. Eddie Baird currently sits atop the Arlington Park leader board, with Christopher A. Emigh, Junior Alvarado and Diego Sanchez in hot pursuit. Baird’s strength lies on the dirt, and he is the noted for his prowess with early speed types. Emigh, an extremely strong finisher, appears to be equally proficient on turf or dirt, and is really comfortable with any type of runner. Rene Douglas, who usually finds his name on the top of the list by meet’s end, is one of the best in the Midwest, when it comes to grass.

A new wager will be introduced for the 2009 Arlington Park meet. Arlington Park will present a Place Pick 9 wager that will usually begin with each afternoon's first race. The $1 minimum wager requires a bettor to correctly select either the first-place or second-place finisher in nine consecutive races. Returning once again in 2009 is the High-5 wager, in which you must select the first five finishers (in order) on a designated race. If nobody hits the High-5 wager for a particular race, the entire net pool will carryover to the next scheduled High-5 race.
