MY WRITE UP ON WINNER SUMMER BIRD IN THE BELMONT ON MY STAKES SHEET SOLD ON BRISNET.COM
SUMMER BIRD

Of all the longshots entered in the Belmont Stakes, Summer Bird is the most interesting. Trainer Tim Ice does not start many horses, but he wins a high percentage of races. Both Ice and Summer Bird's owners, could never envision, that Summer Bird would accomplish as much as he has in such a short period of time. It took him two races to break his maiden. Twenty two days later, Summer Bird was asked to take a huge leap of faith into the Grade 2 Arkansas Derby, facing the likes of Papa Clem and Old Fashioned, who ended up running 1-2. There were others who had more racing experience as well. Summer Bird, sent off at 26-1, was a fast closing third, rallying from dead last, while racing very wide throughout. If the race was a bit longer, he probably would have sprung the upset. “If dreams come true” and “miracles happen”, then Summer Bird was the poster child for both. Just ask the connections of Mine That Bird. Summer Bird did not train well at Churchill Downs in the days leading up to the Kentucky, but nevertheless, he ran a respectable sixth, beaten thirteen lengths, over a sloppy track he had never raced over.

What should we expect from Summer Bird in the Belmont Stakes? Summer Bird’s sire is Birdstone, (also the sire of Mine That Bird), who upset Smarty Jones quest for racing’s Triple Crown, in the 2004 Belmont Stakes. Birdstone’s father, Grindstone, won the 1996 Kentucky Derby. Summer Bird’s mother, Hong Kong Squall, was winless in nine starts, but her dad Summer Squall ran second in the 1990 Kentucky Derby, as well as winning several Graded stakes going a distance of ground. Based on his pedigree, Summer Bird should be able to handle the 1 ½ mile distance of the Belmont. He did not train particularly well at Belmont Park, until his workout last weekend, with new rider Kent Desormeaux. He replaces Rosier, who rode him in his first three starts. Needless to say, this is a monumental rider change. Desormeaux indicated that Summer Bird “handled the track fantastically. He’s fit and ready. He's a happy, healthy horse”. There are too many factors to suggest that Summer Bird has a chance to run better than his big odds will suggest.

RACE ELEVEN TRIP NOTES
Tremendous ride by Chris Emigh who took 3-1 co-favorite SILVERFOOT far off the pace. Took a lesson from Calvin Borel to rally up the rail to get the money. PUBLIC SPEAKER split horses late and look a sure winner until run down by the favorite near the wire.
MORE BETTING ACTION
# 3 and # 7 are co-favorites at 3-1. Well spread out after that.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE ELEVEN
All horses look good. # 2 PUBLIC SPEAKER adds front bandages for the first time off the claim.
BETTING ACTION RACE ELEVEN
Wide open board with # 7 the 2-1 favorite.
THE BELMONT STAKES
The Belmont Stakes is by far the toughest of the three Triple Crown races to win. Horses running in the Kentucky Derby are asked to travel 1 ¼ miles for the first time in their careers. In the Preakness they cut back a sixteenth of mile. But The Belmont Stakes, has been called "The Test of Champions", because, those horses, still standing after the rigors of the Triple Crown, are asked to travel 1 ½ miles. The race starts in front of the stands. The gate is positioned right by the finish line. Horse s must run around the entire track once, with its wide sweeping turns and over Belmont dirt, which can often be deep and tiring. That is why Belmont is referred to as "Big Sandy". Horses who ran in the Derby and Preakness, have only three weeks to recover in time, to be at their best for the third leg of racing’s Triple Crown.

It takes an extraordinary horse to win all three legs. There have been only eleven horses to have accomplished this great feat. Sir Barton was the first to do it in 1919. The forties proved to be the first decade which produced four Triple Crown winners. Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), and Citation (1948). It took twenty five years for the next Triple Crown winner, when Secretariat won by the length of the stretch in 1973. Four years later Seattle Slew won it, and in 1978 Affirmed overcame an intense stretch battle to narrowly out game his nemesis, Alydar. Now, thirty one years later, there has not been a horse to win all three races. There have been forty five horses who have won two out of the three legs of the Triple Crown. Twenty one horses won the Derby and the Preakness, only to fall short in the Belmont Stakes. There are very few races all year that are run at 1 ½ miles and beyond. Except for those three year olds who run in the Belmont, you will only see older gladiators run these marathon distances.

Calvin Borel has a chance to be a Triple Crown winner as a jockey if he wins the Belmont aboard Mine That Bird, whom he rode to victory in the Kentucky Derby. He rode the filly, Rachel Alexandra, to a game victory in the Preakness. According to Borel in Monday’s Daily Racing Form, he stated, “We’re going to win it, no questions asked”. He is the hottest rider in the country at the present time and has an abundance of confidence. If Borel is so sure Mine That Bird cannot lose the Belmont, then we should sell all our stocks, empty out our bank accounts, and break our piggy banks, to run to the windows, to be the first one in line to collect. Mine That bird is a deserving favorite, as he has accomplished more in two Triple Crown races than any of his opposition. But we must not forget that he was 50-1 when he won the Derby, closing up a gold rail while relishing the Churchill slop. The Bird was 6-1 in the Preakness when he ran second. He did have trouble in the race and probably would have won, if the race was a bit longer, but the truth of the matter is that Rachel Alexandra did all the dirty work for horses to close into, as a result of the quick early fractions she set. Borel should take a chapter out of the Richard Dutrow Jr. Holy Scriptures, thou shall never assume that you can predict destiny, especially in thoroughbred horse racing. Dutow stated before the Belmont, that Big Brown was a “lock”, and everyone else is running for second money. Obviously something went amiss that day with Big Brown, as he pulled up early in the race. Borel does not have much experience riding at Belmont Park, let alone traveling 1 ½ miles on horseback over "Big Sandy". Mine That Bird has excelled since being taken well off the pace and making one sustained late run. This type of running style is usually at a disadvantage in the Belmont Stakes, especially if the early fractions are not fast, and if the track is speed favoring.
RACE TEN TRIP NOTES
Speedballs RED NATION and CALL ME KNOW hooked up from the start setting a fast pace. This set it up for the 3-1 winner FUFTY TOO, who split horses late to get the money. Just outgamed MARQUEE EVENT. Tough trip for HONGKONG SUPERSTAR, who steadied and checked at crucial point in the stretch. Recovered to finish best of all and was probably best.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE TEN
All horses look good. # 3 ERNEST DREAM adds blinkers for the 1st time.
MORE BETTING ACTION
Wide Wide open board! favorite is # 9 CALL ME NOW at 3-1. Wide open from there.
NEW GELDINGS IN RACE TEN
# 7 MARQUEE EVENT and # 8 BLUE HEAT, are both first time geldings!
UPDATED WEATHER REPORT AND BETTING ACTION
Rain has stopped. Wide open board. Longshots reign supreme today, as the favorites continue to fall apart in the stretch.
RACE NINE TRIP NOTES
Once again another absurd price on the 7-5 favorite TALETOBETOLD, who faded to next to last. 9-1 upset winner TAYLOR MADISON, recieved a great stalking trip along the rail to win in game fashion. Held off longshot CANDY CANE who rallied from off the pace to nearly run down the winner near the wire, but that one came again to hold on.
MORE BETTING ACTION
# 5 TALETOBETOLD is 8-5 and another one who is overbet. May win, but I am betting against this favorite.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE NINE
All horses look good
UPDATED WEATHER CONDITIONS
The rain has stopped, at least for the moment.
BETTING ACTION ON THE OPEN RACE NINE
1 and 5 opened up 5-2, with the rest well spread out.
RACE EIGHT TRIP NOTES
Another rediculously overbet favorite hit's the skids, as B L'S PAPA COO COO, was dueled into defeat along the rail. did fight hard to the wire, but had to settle for third. 14-1 upset winner SOCART'SMYNAME, sat in mid pack, rallied well through the stretch to draw clear easily last 70 yards. KUNA closed widest late from far off the pace, to run down the favorite for third. Nothing important to note behind those three.
MORE BETTING ACTION
# 2 continues to get bet well. 2-1 with 3 minutes to go. Clearly the horse to beat, but I want no part of him at the overbet 2-1 odds.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE EIGHT
All horses look good but the one with the best appearance is # 5 TIME TO GETIT.
UPDATED WEATHER CONDITIONS
With 13 minutes to go in race 8, it is raining very hard.
BETTING ACTION RACE EIGHT
Wide open board at the open with # 2 B L's PAPA COO COO the 5-2 favorite. The rest well spread out in the betting.
GREAT TRIBUTE TO INJURED RIDER RENE DOUGLAS
Hats off to Arlington Park in giving great rider and human being Rene Douglas a special tribute today.
UPDATED WEATHER REPORT
Light rain is falling at Arlington. I will keep you abreast of any changes in the track conditions.
RACE SEVEN TRIP NOTES
An awful overbet favorite # 8 ROJO SOL, who runs off the board in an awful effort. Had dead aim on dueling leaders to mid stretch, then faded badly. 9-1 wunner CLASSIC ACTRESS gives Von Hemmel and Quincy Hamilton their 2nd win today. This is Quincy's 1000 career win. Chased in 2nd. Wore down the pacesetter inside the 1/16th pole, and drew clear with authority. Both INBETWEEN RAINBOWS and NAN ANN ROCKS closed well from off the pace to get 2nd and 3rd, closing on tired horses late.
MORE BETTING ACTION
# 8 contines to be the heavy favorite at 2-1. I am taking a shot against him as I feel he is overbet.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE SEVEN
All horses look very good. # 3 ARUNDAL, adds fronts back on. Wore them 2 starts back.
OPENING BETTING ACTION RACE SEVEN
1st grass race on the card. # 8 ROJO SOL. opened up a big favorite at 8-5. Far clear of the rest in all pools. Odds on rest well spread out. At this price, I will let him beat me, as he does not like to win much. He prefers to run 2nd or third.
MID DAY BIAS UPDATE
The rail is very strong today, especially the inside-out move in the stretch. Only one horse closed from well off the pace to get the money.
RACE SIX TRIP NOTES
5-1 winner HAPMAN, cleared early, then quickly faced pressure. Fought off that one, but once again met a hard challenge by the 5-2 favorite. Battled tooth and nail along the rail through the stretch with that one, looked beaten, then came again. Returnee and sharp drop down, favorite MONTANA MIKE sat a perfect inside-out trip. Looked a sure winner late, but was outfinished. Rough trip for EAGLE HAWK, who was steadied and checked many times throughout the running. Had no shot off that journey. The rest showed little.
MORE BETTING ACTION RACE SIX
# 3 EAGLE HAWK, who I pointed out look very good in the paddock, just got a good punch in the windows, dropping down to the 7-2 second choice.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE SIX
All horses look good, especially # 3 EAGLE HAWK. # 6 MONTANA MIKE, the favorite at 3-1, is returning off a long layoff with front bandages on for the 1st time, off a sharp drop in class. Not what I like to see.
BETTING ACTION RACE SIX
Wide open board with # 6 MONTANA MIKE the 5-2 favorite. Odds on the rest well spread out.
RACE FIVE TRIP NOTES
Plenty of trips in this maiden race. 3-1 winner ANSONG was tons the best. In the midst of a strong winning move when forced to check hard at the 1/8th pole. Recovered to split horses late and drew clear with complete authority. ASK DON'T TELL ran an improved race setting a pressured pace along the rail. Settled for a good third. 1st timer AMUSING PLAN, was off slowly. Last down the backstretch. Made a very wide sustained move midway on the turn. Fanned out extremely wide into the stretch. Loomed to the 1/8th pole, then tired slowly. Will improve on the stretch out. JUST TO TELL YOU ran a "sneaky" good race. Trying to rally in the stretch when forced to steady in traffic. Tried to move outside, but had to alter course back to the inside. Finish with interest late. Heavy favorite was another one today at short odds who ran off the board. Hung out very wide all the way. Tired bad in mid stretch. Give another chance with a better post.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE FIVE AND WRONG MEDICATION LISTING.
All horses look good. NOTE: 1st timer AMUSING PLAN, not listed using lasix, DOES HAVE LASIX for her debut.
MORE BETTING ACTION RACE FIVE
# 8 continues to take all the money. With 11 minutes to go, she has drifted up to 6-5. The rest of the field is well spread in odds.
BETTING ACTION RACE FIVE
(# 8) I'M FROM DIXIE opened up a huge favorite in all pools at 3-5 odds.
RACE FOUR TRIP NOTES
The fourth straight winner who sat an inside-out trip. 7-2 winner TEE LAK, blew away the field with a strong run from mid stretch. SUAVE DOTTIE M. closed ground late from the far outside, but was no threat to the winner. Favorite FARAWAY KINGDOM, ran dead last in a dismal performance. That's the second Calabrese owned horse as the heavy favorite, running awful off the trainer change to Canani.
STEWARDS RESULT ON THE INQUIRY RACE FOUR
The result stands official.
OWNERS INQUIRY RACE 4
The owner of # 1 is claiming foul against the winner # 4, on the backstretch. Hold all tickets!
MORE BETTING ACTION RACE FOUR
# 5 continues to be the 2-1 favorite, but not in the Pick 3's which is interesting. The favorite is # 6, who has been "icy" on the board.
BONUS PLAY ON PICK OF THE DAY
My bonus play on the Pick Of The Day from Belmont Park race 6, scores in hand, "keying", an exacta over Benny The Bull!. A sweep of 2 selections on the POD today!!!. Winning now at nearly 50 %. Players playing the POD, everyday, are cleaning up!!
PADDOCK NOTES RACE FOUR
All horses look good. (# 5) FARAWAY KINGDOM, making 1st start for trainer Canani for the deadly Calabrese barn, is removing front bandages.
BETTING ACTION RACE FOUR
(# 6) SUAVE DOTTIE M is the slight favorite in the Pick 3's, but opened up at an "icy" 5-1. Should drop in price soon.
POSSIBLE TRACK BIAS
Through the first three races, the rail is very live!!
RACE THREE TRIP NOTES
2-1 co-favorite NUZZLE, shot right out to the lead along the rail, shook off the stalkers top of the stretch, and drew clear with complete authority. 2-1 co-favorite MISS ZIPPY, sat a perfect inside -out trip. Dead aim on the winner through the stretch, but was no match from mid stretch. Reat of the field showed little.
LATE SCRATCH RACE THREE
1st timer (# 4) KERRY FROST TWO, is a LATE SCRATCH.
PADDOCK NOTES RACE THREE AND BETTING ACTION
All horses look good. 1 and 3 are both 5-2. I feel that # 1 is overbet at that price off the drop. Rest of the field well spread out in odds.
BETTING ON THE OPEN IN RACE THREE
Wide open board with 1-3-5 the favorites at 3-1.
RACE TWO TRIP NOTES
Identical running style as race 1, with 3-1 winner MARVELEX riding the rail's, chasing the front runner TWIN BUTTES, then angling outside in deep stretch, to just nail Twin Buttes who cleared early. Took a nice lead into the stretch, but could not hold on late. Swished tail late in the race which indicated she was tiring. 4-5 favorite WESTERN SWEEP, was taken back to last and confidently ridden. Swung out at the top of the stretch widest with dead aim. Came up completly empty the final eighth in a weak performance.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONSAND BETTING ACTION RACE TWO
All seven horses look good. # 2 continues to get hammered in the wagering. With 4 minutes to go, she is 6-5 and dropping.
BETTING MENU
Race two begins the early Pick 4.
FRONT BANDAGES BACK ON
(# 1) MARVELEX, is adding fronts back on. Wore them to success three starts back.
BETTING ACTION ON THE OPEN RACE TWO
(# 2) WESTERN SWEEP, opened up at 8-5, and is well clear of the rest in the betting in all pools. Figured to take most of the money, making 1st start for trainer Nick Canani, and the red hot owner Frank Calabrese. Only other horse to be taking money is (# 4) TWIN BUTTES, who is 5-2. The rest are well spread out with good price.
RACE ONE TRIP NOTE
1st timer 5-2 winner BEAUTIFUL BLISS chased along the rail until easing outside at the 1/16th pole with dead aim on CREDIT CRUNCH. Wore that rival down nearing the wire in a fine debut. Rest of the field were well back of the top two. Well bet SURELY IRISH, showed some early speed, but tired steadily from mid stretch. Did not show much, but should improve over grass which she is bred well for.
MORE BETTING ACTION RACE ONE
1st timer (# 3), just took a big punch, dropping her odds to the favorite at 6-5. 1ster # 1 is drifting up. Only 2 horses to be taking serious money with 7 minutes to go are #2, who has run, and # 3.
PADDOCK OBSERVATIONS RACE ONE
All horses look very good and relaxed. Nice field of 2 year olds.
MORE BETTING ACTION RACE ONE
The lone horse to have run, (# 2), just took a punch in the betting, driving down his price to 6-5.
BETTING ACTION IN RACE ONE
Race one is for 2 year olds going 4 1/2 furlongs. Only 3 horses are getting bet, 1-2-3. (# 1), 1st timer BEAUTIFUL BLISS, is the narrow favorite in ALL pools. (# 3) SURELY IRISH, also a firster, is the co-choice, also at 8-5 with 20 mimutes to go. The lone horse to have started (# 2) CREDIT CRUNCH, is the 2-1 second choice. The betting indicates that the two 1sters are being keyed on in exactas and doubles.
THE WIZARD'S PICK OF THE DAY SCORES AGAIN!!
My Pick Of The Day, blows away the field in the third races at Belmont. Pick of the day winning at a monumental 49 %, and that does not include all the exactas and tri's given out.
